If you’re looking for an article on the minutiae of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” you have come to the wrong URL and then some. The debt clock scares me as much any normal person, but I’ve had enough of all the bickering over expenditures—in fact all the bickering over everything.
Ditto the threats by Elon Musk and others (no, I’m not turning in my Tesla; I like it) to form some third party that most Americans are supposedly craving, an absurd notion so doomed to failure it’s not worth discussing.
Ditto America First when it is defined so narrowly we might as well call it America Only. Of course unfettered foreign intervention is massively self-destructive. We’ve learned that lesson. But last we all looked we’re still part of humanity. John Donne’s no man is an island still applies. Sometimes isolationism isn’t such a great idea and Donald Trump has shown himself incredibly skilled at determining the degrees to which we should be involved, more so than anybody I can recall.
This includes those who fail to realize the obvious—no ideology is perfect, never was, never will be. Not just Democrats replace religion with politics, although they do it to a fare the well.
I yearn for a Fourth of July where we can just marvel at spectacular fireworks, celebrate our country and not have to worry excessively that they were made in China or even that a “Democratic Socialist” (there’s no such thing) might be elected mayor of New York.
It hasn’t been that way for a long time.
But now it could be if we let it. We have a president who, more than anyone in recent memory, is a real leader who has been leading us in the right direction.
It is barely an eighth of the way into his second term and the results, domestically and globally, have been nothing short of astonishing. Perfect? No. But when has that ever happened in human affairs?
Not surprisingly, jealousy, the obvious motor of Trump Derangement Syndrome, is everywhere, not only from the (disloyal) opposition but from members of his own party.
These members who are now blocking the BBB seem like entitled brats, the kind that might throw out the proverbial baby with the bathwater, only this time there are myriad babies being thrown out—meaning us, the people, the ones who elected these same members.
There are around ten of these obstructionists at the moment, one of whom is my own congressman, though the number is ever fluctuating. They have been termed “deficit hawks” but I’m not sure that’s entirely an accurate portrayal. To be kind, they seen equally motivated to see themselves on television and are milking those opportunities as long as possible.
Other congressmen, like Tim Burchett from the Tennessee Second, also clearly a “deficit hawk,” if there ever was one, are voting for the BBB. I would guess Rep. Burchett’s case because he sees politics as the art of the possible. Good on him. It’s not anything else—unless you prefer blood on the streets.
The rest should follow Rep. Burchett’s lead, vote for the bill and do what a decent legislator should do—move forward with what’s best for the republic at the moment, then fight on for your heart’s desire.
Meanwhile, pass the bloody incongruous and admittedly imperfect thing and give this country the best Fourth of July in decades. We the People deserve it.
Nothing like a dose of good old fashioned common sense and patriotism first thing in the morning. Thank you, Roger. Happy 4th of July to everyone!
I'm with you on this one Roger! All I care about these days is the health and safety of my kids and other family members (of course a couple of really good friends I can count on one hand.) At 71, I'm working PT as a dedicated grocery bagger at a local chain here in NC just to make a few extra bucks to put back into savings after a couple of weddings. I don't engage in any political conversations with fellow teammates or customers as I have learned that lesson many times over. Most of my teammates are younger, high school kids that are too transfixed with their cell phones which Mgmt. has banned during working hours. However, they do not enforce the rule as they face finding anyone who wants to work these days. We sell Made in China fireworks that come in all shapes, sizes and pricing. It's great to see the youngsters and parents pick and choose their preferred types. It brings back memories of the good ole' days of M-80's and Cherry Bombs I grew up with on Long Island!! Have a great 4th and God bless America, POTUS, our military and Veterans.
