You've had a lot to think about over the Passover season Roger. I struggle with the "unnamed" host you mention who in one episode has a guest castigating Churchhill and then hosts Jonathan Roumi in a thought provoking discussion on what it's like to play Jesus. How do I reconcile the two?

I can't, so I learn to scrub the dirt from my mind, pray more often, and go outside. It worked as a kid and it still works now.

Like the oldest profession, the oldest hatred will never go away. It only crawls back in its hole when the Jewish People no longer appear weak. That is why we need Israel to thoroughly defeat its enemies. My hope is that DJT doesn’t get in the way of that. He currently is waging a war against the academy which is appropriate but paradoxically inflames the “historians” by demonstrating the apparent “power” that the Jews have at least in America. At present, America and the West have forgotten what never again means.

I have found, in talking with like minded and unlike minded people, that most of us live in our own information bubbles. We listen to or read those we agree with. If we should disagree with a post or a comment from our "side" we ignore or immediately forget it. But I even with the above I have found that people of the conservative bent are usually more information or fact based and those of the more liberal bent are more emotion based. This makes for interesting conversation in that the two sides seems to talk past each other instead of to each other and no one changes any ones mind. The other interesting observation, to me anyway, is that most people can not conceive of second order effects. Beyond second order effects is to contemplate Einstein's theories. But as always thanks for an enjoyable and well thought out read.

I only have to compliment you on the "reality check" about God being in charge of it all. More and more of my friends, many of whom have been in utter, clinical, anguish since November 5, have deliberately tuned out of TV news and social media. They have reported a renewed peace in their lives, they read newspapers for their news, which doesn't seem to inspire such visceral angst. Years and years ago, I was in journalism. We had systems in place, checks and balances, rules of grammar even, we followed to wring the hype and emotionalism out of our news stories. The best of which was always to take what we heard with a grain of salt till it had been well-vetted.

Perhaps all these "tuner-outers" will someday constitute a "market" large enough to attract a new generation of journalists and news outlets to serve them rather than manipulate them.

Here's hoping, and thanks for your well-reasoned post!

I have tried to shut off all the “noise “ that is attacking my ears and entering my brain but the sheer amount of it prohibits that. So in my old age I am attempting to be more discerning, but even that is proving to be difficult. When this happens, I go to the best reference book ever written….the Bible. I always go to a saying I read on a sign, “No God no peace, know God know peace “.

Great article Roger!

Rick, you offer the best advice. When I was a kid, a parent in the neighborhood told a bunch of us that, "Everything you need to know is in the Bible." We thought he was nuts. We made fun of him for being so "narrow." Alas, I wish he were still alive to thank him for saying so. It took years and sad false turns, but it's the "go-to" source. Keep telling others. Thanks.

I trust you. You know about things I'm not familiar with and would like to know more. When you're not absolutely certain about something you say so. Your opinions usually make sense and I like your writing style and wit.

I'll go on reading as long as you go on writing. Take care Roger!

You are correct Roger ( I am feeling a bit guilty writing this since I did get drawn into reading your comments today).. But I do enjoy your take on the current events and podcasts.. I have decided that some podcasts are no different than 7th grade gossip/ arguments/door slamming.. I no longer feel the need to open. My other thought on all of the current behaviours is KARMA...Energy always balances itself out..

This is one of the best posts I’ve read from Mr Simon. He is almost always good, but this is superlatively good!

Re the Goya aquatint-etching accompanying the post: Faith is not opposed to reason, and reason must be relied upon by faith. Simultaneously, reason must not be used to undermine the good (including faith, hope, and charity).

Both faith and reason, and for that matter, everything human, can be corrupted. But they can also be made better (or as Spinoza would say, “more perfect”)

Mr Simon certainly helps to make things better!

"gilding a very dangerous lily "

The original, which refers to applying paint to a lily or gold plating actual gold, is about superfluous things.

Therefore, to be possess'd with double pompe,

To guard a Title, that was rich before;

To gilde refined Gold, to paint the Lilly;

To throw a perfume on the Violet,

To smooth the yce, or adde another hew

Unto the Raine-bow; or with Taper-light

To seeke the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,

Is wastefull, and ridiculous excesse.

— William Shakespeare, King John, 1623

But what if we are to actively stand against evil rather than hit the snooze button because we have faith?
