"Decades of mismanagement led to choked forests — now it's time to clear them out, fire experts say" -- from Oct. 18, 2020! The failure to do so made fires like this inevitable. Add that to the fire hydrant failures discussed by Roger.
I led a team in Tucson, seeking to employ "robots" and "drones" to 1) clean up the forest floors and 2) overfly the fires to help direct and save lives. I learned about the budgeting process and how such matters might find traction. Prevention doesn't seem to move the needle. Please consider what that means.
The desert comes up to the mountains. The ridgelines hem development into the magical coastal strip. None of it has abundant rainfall. The famous sunshine means it's dry. The scrub that blankets the hills and fills every canyon is adapted to the dry environment. Many plants propagate through fire. The plant is consumed, but the seeds remain. There is sap in the scrub plants that is like "gasoline" in its inflammability. Add to the dryness, the combustible plants, a predictable recurrence of extremely high winds and you have a perfect formula for sudden fire outbreaks in difficult terrain. None of this would matter too much, but millions of people live there. Many of the most valuable properties are in the most vulnerable areas. That moronic left politics couldn't manage to keep the water buckets filled in the fire zone is sadly unsurprising.
Great piece again, Roger! I know it may take time for a transition, but shouldn’t we have “lame duck restrictions”? “Lame duck, you can only do the very basics to keep the country going”?
I totally agree!!! it shouldn't take 3 months to pass the torch. And meanwhile, the former president should NOT be allowed to give away billions of dollars to his favorite friends, especially when we are already 36 trillion in debt!!!!
Read or heard somewhere that the city or county NEGLECTed to fill the water reservoirs and there was no water in the fire hydrants? ugh - -- my brother is there rn without power or phone service. I am a refugee also... still licensed to practice in Calif.... I smell the liability exposure now.... and good luck ever getting home insurance there again . . . it is already scarcely available.
Hmmm … does anyone out there follow the annual burn rate fostered and overseen by federal land agencies? It’s about 9,000,000 acres. State agencies are less, but the trend for the last 100 years has been the concerted elimination of all natural (and proven effective) tools that moderate fires. As a rancher, I live everyday with one of the best converters of the excess fuel loads that are burning in the LA metroplex tonight, but heaven forbid suggesting a cow herd, a band of goats, or a band of sheep over time upslope from those houses would have contributed greatly to the reduction of this tragedy. No, we live with generational trainloads of charlatans that have lost all contact with the natural world. So, we will watch the (catastrophic) fires burn, support political sh*t shows, and denigrate any and all actions that will actually make a difference.
Totally agree l, Trump should have been installed 11/6/24. So I take it this area has a female mayor & fire chief? Between this & that idiot in New Orleans there is more than ample reason to repeal the 19th amendment.
Please don't take away all women's right to vote because of these idiots. Check out Gavin Gruesome, Justin Castreau, and of course The Biden Crime Family to make a case that men shouldn't vote either.
Big thanks also to the Firefighters and others who are serious about their roles and work to keep us all safe.
Gotta say; this add to the body of proof that we are at the end of a "political" (some call it "socio-economic" cycle (Dr. George Friedman)). You can find literature describing this readily nowadays. Some at the base.
In any event, when we see merit ignored, high degrees of cronyism, "leaders" who don't seem to have interest, experience, or training in their field, failing/under-supported public services (like water to fire hydrants), and people appearing to believe things that are obviously false...of and let's not forget "excessive progressivism", the liklihood that we're in the destruction phase of a Political cycle is very high.
It often comes in lockstep with "excess collectivism" and precedes human suffering. Now for three of the related works:
Atlas Shrugged (novel), Death of Stalin (fun movie), Emperor's New Clothes (childrens story)...let me know if you want more.
Quotation from the hilarious movie, "The Death of Stalin": "I think Stalin's dead!" "Call a doctor." "I can't. They're all in in the gulag, in exile, or we killed them."
As another conservative podcaster (Dan Bongino) asks, "Is it bad enough yet?" Sadly not sure even this will open enough eyes in California, a beautiful but badly ill-governed state. IIRC, Trump was encouraging CA and its utilities to do a better job of forest management during Trump's first term. Clearly no lessons learned.
Another podcaster I like (Derek Hunter) asked why there is no desalination plant to replenish (at least) fire hydrants, if drought is the issue.
CA used to be full of creative problem solvers, where are they now? (I guess most fleeing...)
“..moral narcissism and VIRTUAL signaling..” I think you meant:
VIRTUE signaling
As a California refugee to Tennessee (and owner of your book) I’m struggling with the Malibu and Pacific Palisades people themselves.
They are by and large the Professional Managerial class, the “Coastal Elites.”
They ignored the devastating fires 🔥 in San Diego county where I lived. They failed to change policies and the city of Paradise burned, resulting in the highest loss of life in an American 🇺🇸 fire disaster to date.
The Coastal Elites ignored numerous major fires 🔥 and fire policy debates. Alternate Forest management, can only Union employees fight the fires 🔥? Unconstitutional use of 2014 California initiative moneys to destroy 4 hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River, rather than build three reservoirs containing 4.5 Million acre feet of water 💦. The BUILDING OF RESERVOIRS was specified in the initiative.
The Coastal Elites in Pacific Palisades and Malibu, are members of what the Sociologists call the “Professional-Managerial” Class.
They have the power to change things, unlike Citizens in the less important areas of California that normally burn.🔥
These people do not tolerate the word “NO” in corporate life(a significant part of my career). Let’s see what they do with California government THEY VOTED FOR.
I grew up in Altadena, home right now to a fire with it's own name: the Eaton Fire. I presume because it is in Eaton Canyon, a place that was about a mile from my house, and where I hiked frequently.
So I for one hope this disaster will result in a change in the Golden Staate. Not that I am very optimistic it will, but seeing Mayor Bass freeze up when asked why she was absent, or seeing Governor Newsom flounder when faced with saving the little fish that it turns out is actually fairly common but has resulted in a lack of water, I am hoping CA voters wil finally say "enough" and change the way they have been voting.

True about fire. Those beautiful majestic Sequoia trees require fire for their
seeds. Many are fire scarred & take my breath away. Yes I have hugged them
& been amazed & thankful.

Karen Bass and LA Fire will be just another chapter in the Next Edition of Atlas Shrugged
Along with Black Molly Mayor in Chicago. The other Lesbian in Houston and too many to count
LA's mayor even has a Randian type name. Like Leslie Mooch
Watch for my forthcoming post on LA Fire giving it context over time
I hope when they try to rebuild they have to follow ALL the red tape and building codes. Basically move in ready by 2031
Excellent article. Thanks!

But climate change......hahahahahahaha
If they can’t blame it on Trump, they blame it on climate change!

Now you know, anything Trump suggests to the radical liberals, they are going to do the exact opposite, just like an immature teenager!!!

Roger, I Thank God for you, for having the knowledge, for knowing what is going on in NEVER NEVER land --- -----soon to be known as Dumpty Caly.
I grew up in Altadena, home right now to a fire with it's own name: the Eaton Fire. I presume because it is in Eaton Canyon, a place that was about a mile from my house, and where I hiked frequently.

We may have passed each other in Eston Canyon but my regular hikes were in Runyon near my house of 29 years that was apparently spared.
All a part of God's plan.
