Right on, on both themes.

I first went to the Middle East in 1956, travelling overland from Germany with my father and ultimately staying for a year at AUB. I was moved by the sight of hundreds of refugee tents out near the airport and wondered how long it would be before the people living in them could move into more permanent housing. As it turns out, it would be generations, because having his people living in tents would suit Yasir Arafat just fine -- they offered him an enormous fundraising opportunity and gave both Arafat and UNRWA an excuse to criticize the west for not "doing something" about the refugee camps.

It was then I began to wonder about the value of the UN. Was it helping or harming the poor of the world.

Fast forward about 40 years. I am assigned to the American embassy in Bangui, Central African Republic. As part of my job there, I wanted to visit and report to the Department of State on, several refugee camps run by the UN High Commission for Refugees on the border between CAR and Chad.

I visited and became friends with an official of the UNHCR who was also visiting the camp. He too lived in Bangui, and our families went on to see each other often. Then one day I called on him in his office, and his boss, a Britisher who was the High Commissioner in Bangui, later told him he should not be "meeting with the enemy."

Huh? My government paid the largest portion of their budget -- and his salary -- of any country, and much of the food being distributed at the camps came from America, and we were "the enemy?" It stunned and saddened me.

That is the UN I know.

The UNRWA has historically been a willing partner with those who hate Jews and I don’t think HAMAS and other terrorists would be successful without this charlatan organization. I am and have read a number of books supporting the duplicity and damage done by the UNRWA. I do not understand how we continue to support this organization.

Seems that the UN and it's various off shoots suffer from the NGO disease...corruption, propaganda and manipulation.

Re Musk, I believe he had reached the limit of his allowed tenure as a "special govt employee".

Re monthly fees, many are $5 monthly. That said, it can add up for any of us...

The UN, just another forum for the Jew haters to try and annihilate the only Jewish nation in the world. DJT is doing a great job attempting to eliminate institutions of “ higher” learning from discriminating against Jewish students by defunding them. He should extend this to the so called UN.

The UN has gone from useless to pure Nazi like evil. It is no longer possible to distinguish the UN from the Palestinian Death Cult. They are one and the same and it is a crime that these demons continuing to spew their evil on American soil with this country funding a full third of it.

Roger: The UN and UNWRA ETC are SHOCKED! SHOCKED! to discover Israel is full of Jews! What else could they do? Surely, they can't tolerate a country full of Jews!! If they did, where would it end!!! There would be Jews everywhere! Oh wait. My Jewish great grandfather was a wagon boss on the Santa Fe trail. Maybe there already are Jews everywhere. Too late The world will end

The UN has been corrupt for a long time. I absolutely despise their ability to do anything that accomplishes whatever will amount to anything worth while.

Thank you, Roger, as always for your insight. There is no question that Hamas's existence has in large part been directly accomplished through and by the UN which is supported by membership countries such as Great Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Turkey & countless other Islamic countries and unfortunately, the United States. I've yet to see one proposal made by President Trump's Special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, that doesn't appease the Death Cult Hamas. Mr. Witkoff's latest proposal includes the release of 126 Life Prisoners (nice guys) and 1,111 Gazan prisoners who were arrested after October 7, and the return of the "Humanitarian" Aid by the Official Hamas ‘Friends for Life’ - the UN. What a bunch of dog doodoo. Israel also must abide by a 60-day ceasefire and withdraw from territories occupied since the last Trump ceasefire. Israel makes progress to finally eliminate the terrorist Hamas organization, and Mr. Witkoff (Trump?) offer's Hamas an extension to regroup, regain strength, and continue the war. I am sick of it!!!! Let Netanyahu, his cabinet and the IDF eradicate this despicable and dark disease, Hamas and deport the remaining pro Hamas Gazans to countries who are unfortunate enough to receive them. Israel has spent billions of dollars and the lives of too many of its country men and women giving aid to this ungrateful, antisemitic group known erroneously as Palestinians.

Thanks for another timely article. Comments:

1) Despite the very poor behaviors, we must seek to continue being fair-minded and objective in our approach to others, regardless of their behaviors toward us.

2) The results of steadfast determination, focused on objectives, are being shown to those who look. Spread the word.

3) The UN, unfortunately, is yet another product of rising collectivism at the close of this 50yr economic cycle. It is clear that these UN leaders have been placed into their positions for reasons other than topical interest in the UN charter - most having little experience, education, or interest, including with the behaviors necessary to lead, but rather making their "masters" feel comfortable that they will execute on unchallenged rhetoric.

4) The lack of open and earnest debate in the Western Media (rather under the same affliction as in 3) above) , allows these deeply damaging behaviors to be far lesser checked and acknowledged. We look like children: "mom, he pinched me!" "No, I didn't. He pulled my hair!"...and people emulate leaders...this is important. We can see a "slide" in our discipline by comparing written works.

5) We must push back hard against the use of for those lesser capable citizens being used as "livestock" and "fodder" designed to benefit a leadership, who has become authoritarian, serving themselves in far too great of proportion...or soon, we, too, will be included in this group. (Leaders who begin to surveil, repress, and LIE regularly to their constituents, have something to hide. Hold them to account.)

This is America. Leaders are leaders because people choose to follow, whether we lead poorly or well. Let us choose the latter.

As always, I agree with all your statements and for the reasons you give. I have long lamented our support for the UN. It became clear to me years ago that UN delegates and staff and family can get away with committing crimes—even murder in our country—because they get “diplomatic immunity.” The UN building needs to be used for something necessary and important for OUR COUNTRY. Send those ambassadors and all their staff and families back to their countries. And we need the brilliance of Elon Musk to keep getting our country (and the world) to a better place. His intelligence and work ethic is much needed. And rid our country of the useless UN people.

l like and agree withe your comments. I think, though that Musk has had a bigger impact than you allow. We've always known how bad the Govt. was. And he just showed it to us with concrete examples. So for somebody to say we do something useful even PBS NPR every will just laugh. Not the media but who listens to them my opinion.
