After Mamdani, who?

Despite the best efforts of the good people of Staten Island, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion Zohran Mandani—an antisemitic socialist, of all things— is going to be the next mayor of New York City.

With his opponents being two seedy corruptocrats and a Republican nice guy with the charisma of an armadillo, all splitting their votes, if they get any in the first place, this election is over before it starts.

It’s also a foregone conclusion that Mamdani will be a disaster as mayor because socialism itself always is. The only people who still believe in it are college professors (or, in this case, the son of one) or the editors of the New Yorker magazine. Everyone else is either faking it or clueless, the latter being the more likely. (Mao’s Great Leap Forward—wazzat? How many millions did you say died? Oh, come on, that’s communism, not socialism. They called it socialism too? Well, uh….uh…)

Already people are planning their departures from the city, or are in the process of doing it, or have actually done. it, those who can afford to anyway.

I have been to Miami’s Brickell financial district recently and the place is humming. Can you imagine what it will be like after six months of Zohran, or even six weeks?

The epicenter of American business, and probably the arts, since they usually follow the money, will have moved to South Florida, if it’s not halfway there already. Texas and Tennessee will also benefit, plus several other mostly-red states.

I won’t go on because the point is obvious. By the next election, November 2029, New York will be gasping for air.

Who can bring it back?

We all know the person by far the most qualified, the one who knows the terrain just about as well as anybody, will have been out of a job for about a year or so at that point.

An extreme doer, if there ever was one, he is likely to be bored and looking for something to occupy him. The mayor of New York has been said by many to be the second most important job in America. It still could be construed as a comedown for this man who has already been the President of the United States while being accused of being ‘king,” “dictator,” and a lot of other things. Nevertheless it’s a job that will definitely need doing, to say the least. The situation—from DeBlasio to Adams and now Mamdani, what were New Yorkers thinking— will undoubtedly be desperate. A total clean up will be necessary.

Now I know you’re thinking he will be 84 at that time, but for Trump age is just another palindrome. 84 is the new 48.

You may also be recalling that he lost in NYC in the 2024 presidential election to one of the most inept candidates of all time, Kamala Harris. True enough. But come 2029, even the lobotomized voters of New York will have had enough. Common sense will have broken through (hopefully) not just on Staten Island.

Even rich Manhattanites (those few still left) will notice that the rest of the country (okay, not California) has done pretty well under Trump’s second presidential term. Everyone else was prospering while they were running out of avocados and oat milk in their state-run grocery stores. Not only that, crime in the streets was worse than it ever was. And never mind a cop—who would want to serve in New York anymore—you couldn’t find a social worker to help you.

The so-called elite (again those few left) would be choking on their own virtue signaling.

As for the AOC fans, they might wake up and realize their congresswoman is a phony profiteer who screwed them out of lucrative jobs at Amazon that are now giving their peers in other cities decent lives.

So Trump could win in a landslide.

As mayor, DJT might get to doing some things he wasn’t able to do during his presidency, like finding a way to get the UN out of New York and employing that prime East River real estate for something useful for a change. He also might return the statue of Teddy Roosevelt, known to be a Trump favorite, to its proper place in front of the Museum of Natural History. The streets might even be clean for the first time in forty years.

He could Make NYC Great Again.

On the other hand, it might be too late, even for Donald Trump.

A new mayor who would arrest the prime minister of Israel in the American city with by far the most Jews, who had to promise NOT to urge people to “Globalize the Intifada” anymore, could work covertly to do some version of that in the streets of New York. That could yield a situation beyond repair.

In that case, Trump and the rest of the world would have to move on. New York would have become yet another case in the rise and fall of great cities. Londonistan on the Hudson.
